Eyes for Mercy
Making cruelty visible and preventable

Together in Memory.
Together for Mercy.

This wall holds the names and stories of the ones who should still be here — and those who survived cruelty no living being should ever have faced. Their lives remind us of love, resilience, and pain, and their stories stay with us.

Their memory, and their survival, deepen our compassion and guide what we do. Remembering them keeps us connected, helps us support one another, and ensures their lives continue to matter.

Here, we acknowledge loss, honor survivors, and hold these stories together — so no one has to carry them alone.

If you feel called to share the story of an animal you loved — whether lost or living — we welcome you to add their story to this wall. Your remembrance keeps their light alive for all of us.

The Ones Who Should Still Be Here

These precious lives were taken too soon. We remember them with the mercy they were denied, so their suffering is not forgotten, and their memory guides our community toward deeper compassion.

A Short Life Lost to Cruelty

The puppy in the photo was Oak—healthy, beautiful, and newly purchased from a pet store in 2023. He would be called Miracle.

Two years later in October 2025, he was found on the side of the road, his body hollowed by starvation, unable to stand.

He didn’t “end up” there. He was left there after being starved over weeks, maybe months. His body was so depleted he could no longer lift himself. This level of emaciation does not happen by accident. It is the result of sustained cruelty.

A Good Samaritan found him and posted a plea for help. The community came together, and he was rushed to a shelter, where he was renamed Miracle, because hope was all that was left. But his body had already been pushed past survival.

He died because someone either did this knowingly or because those who saw him suffering chose not to intervene. Both are cruelty.

We never met Miracle, but we share his story because recognizing suffering is where our work begins — his, and the many before him, and the many still struggling now.

Miracle’s death is a crime. An investigation was opened, supported by a nonprofit organization that offered a reward to help uncover who was responsible. On November 7, 2025, an arrest was made. It was later learned that his original name was Oak.*

Knowing this—and knowing that someone is being held accountable for the suffering he endured—brings a measure of justice, even if it came too late to save him.

Justice Never Came

His details were almost unbearable — his front and hind paws duct-taped together, his snout tightly bound, then shot in the head and left on the side of the road.

It happened in late February 2023. There may have been local reports, but none that brought wider attention until a local advocate brought his story to light on social media a week later. Beyond that, there was only silence. There were no updates, no mention, no acknowledgment of the cruelty that took his life.

The image of what was done to him was too brutal to ignore. When the weight of it felt overwhelming for others, one advocate stayed. No one else had stepped up, so he decided to fight for him, and gave him a name: Terry, because every life deserves one.

He offered a reward for information, continued posting to raise awareness, and pressed for justice. He urged local news to cover the story and followed up with the sheriff’s department, which confirmed an investigation. But no updates ever followed. No record. No recognition that what happened to Terry was a crime. No leads emerged. No arrests were made.

We met Terry only through his story. But the brutality of his death and the unanswered pleas for justice, stayed with us. Even after years, his story still strikes a chord in our hearts, not only for the violence he suffered, but for how easily his suffering could have been forgotten, if not for one person who refused to let it be.

Terry’s death was not only an act of violence, it was a test of compassion. His story endures because someone believed his life mattered.

Terry, and the countless others who suffered like him, will not be forgotten.

Because what happened to them is why Eyes for Mercy exists — to make cruelty visible, to speak for those left unheard, and to ensure no life ends unseen, unnamed, or unanswered.

The Ones Who Survived What They Shouldn’t Have

These are the ones who lived through what no being ever should. Their resilience reminds us why mercy matters, why intervention saves lives, and why every survivor deserves to be seen beyond what they endured.

Vinny
Suffered in Plain Sight

Vinny was found on the streets in a condition that spoke for itself. His mouth had been bound with strings and rubber bands — a deliberate cruelty meant to starve him and force a long, quiet suffering. The bands had carved so deeply into his skin that everything around his snout and chin was left completely raw, swollen, and deformed. The vet feared he might lose his muzzle altogether. This wasn’t an accident. It was intentional.

A good Samaritan saw him walk right up to her, desperate for help, his thin frame and deep wounds showing how long he’d been hurting. A local rescue stepped in, a second rescue seven hours away agreed to take him, and a volunteer drove the long distance to get him there. For the first time, he wasn’t alone.

We remember Vinny’s story because it shows the hard truth: people likely saw him suffering, yet still walked past. It took one person choosing not to look away — and rescues and volunteers willing to act — to stop the suffering he’d been left to endure and give him a chance to feel what love truly is.

At Eyes for Mercy, Vinny’s story underscores why this work exists: to bring visibility to cruelty that often goes unnoticed, to make sure the next Vinny isn’t left to suffer alone, and to support the people who step forward when others don’t.

This story matters because it carries both truths: the brutality some animals endure, and the small acts of courage that interrupt it. Remembering Vinny helps us see the gaps that allowed this to happen — and the responsibility we share in making sure animals like him are protected, seen, and never abandoned to this kind of suffering again.

Mirabel
The Abuse They Refused to Prosecute

This is Mirabel after she was saved. In July 2025, she was only four months old and barely 11 pounds—covered in severe mange, dehydrated, anemic, and so weak she could hardly stand. Her sister, Isabela, was found with her in the same condition. They apparently had two other siblings; one was discovered deceased and another couldn’t be found. Their bodies showed how long they had been trying to survive on their own.

Just hours earlier, a man had choked Mirabel with a belt, pinned her by her neck, kicked her in the face with boots, and chased her as she tried to escape. A witness recorded it on their dash cam and sent the footage to an independent local news outlet, which finally brought the cruelty to light.

An investigation was opened, but the District Attorney declined to press charges, saying the incident didn’t meet the technical legal requirements for animal cruelty under state law. It was devastating to hear, and it’s what pushed the community to demand accountability, knowing that without consequences he’s free to do it again. Speaking up is the only way to fight for justice for Mirabel and protect other animals.

Their lives changed only because someone reported what they saw, the footage was shared, and a rescue stepped in immediately to take Mirabel and Isabela in. For the first time, they were somewhere they didn’t have to be afraid—somewhere they finally had the chance to feel loved and safe.

And this is why their story matters to Eyes for Mercy. It shows how easily cruelty can be overlooked, how often evidence goes nowhere, and how much depends on the people who choose not to stay silent. For animals like them, being seen matters. Speaking up matters. And sometimes one report—one video—is all it takes to save a life..
